Here’s a short condensed itinerary of our wine trip

  • Umbria is a bit isolated but you can fly to the Perugia airport which is only 10-20km away from the heart of Umbrian wine country or do a longer drive from Rome (130km).

  • Renting a car is really the best way to get around unless you hire a private driver.

  • Perugia is the largest town in the region and the best place to kick off a trip.

Perugia

Perugia, a pristine medieval city, known for amazing rich foods, chocolate, and beautiful winding streets. The perfect place to headquarter your Umbrian wine trip.

Giampiero Bea of Paolo Bea

Probably the most famous and important wine maker of the region, his family winery is the flagship for Umbria, and has helped spread the reputation for quality of the wines of this region around the globe. Whenever I see his wines on a wine list i’m sure to oder them!

Black Truffles of Umbria

Black truffles are an integral part of Umbrian regional cuisine. When in season, and if you can find them, add them to pretty much any Umbrian dish including this month’s pasta recipe for an intense umami flavor!

Umbrian Countryside

With rolling hills and beautiful valleys rivaling that of any in Tuscany, and even all of Italy, Umbria’s pure beauty if often overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors.

Biodynamic Vineyards of Mani di Luna

The biodynamic vineyards of Mani di Luna are full of live with bees, cover crops, and flowers. Next time you are in any wine region see if you can spot the healthy vibrant biodynamic vineyards next many others that use industrial fertilizers and weed killer.

Sagrantino Vineyards of Montefalco

The most important/famous grape of the region is Sagrantino, which makes both intense, tannic, long lived red wines and the regions dessert wines. Give them at least 10 years of age and plenty of air and a lot of meat/fat in your dish, but they can be amazingly complex.
