Here’s a short condensed itinerary of our wine trip

  • On our recent trip we were able to visit the Northern Rhone, flying into Lyon.

  • There are many great wine areas of the Northern Rhone, St. Josepn only takes a little over an hour drive from Lyon.

  • Rental car is definitely the way to go. We stated in Lyon and stated near St. Joseph before returning.

Mauves

On the “left” of west side of the river, Mauves is a sleepy town thats a good base for some of the better known St. Joseph wineries but is also very close to some of the more bustling villages like Tain Hermitage

Granite Soils of the Slopes of St. Joseph

The granite cliffs give the wines of St. Joseph their distinct mineral character, and wine made in these soils are clearly separated in quality from those made in the flatlands.

Jean Louis Chave

Considered by many to be the greatest winemaker of the region, and better known for his wine from Hermitage, Chave has take a keen interest in St. Joseph starting a project here and making excelling wines from this region.

Legends Gather

Raymond Trollat meets the the Gonon brotherers of Pierre Gonon. Along with Chave, these are some of the top wine makers of the region. Trollat has retired and sold some of his vineyards to the Gonons, but remains a presence in the winemaking community.

Hotel de la Villeon in Tournan

Quaint and rustic, a great place to relax, and easily walk across the bridge to restaurant options in Tain Hermitage.

St. Joseph

Now a days a somewhat sprawling region, but if you stick to the original villages, and old school producers you’ll be pleasantly rewarded. Not as famous (or expensive) as its neighbors, but this region offers great value and unique wines.
