Wine Trip

Rioja spain

HOla! travel to rioja spain with us this month!

Here is an itinerary of my trip to Rioja Spain with some friends. Though actual travel isn’t possible right now, keep this trip in mind for the future. Let this month’s wine and food take you away on a trip to Spain!

  • Flew from London to Bilbao on budget airline flight. Fast and cheap, maybe a little over an hour an a half.

  • Rental cars were easy to get and pretty cheap. Keep in mind there are rarely automatic cars in Europe!

Hotel Los Augustinos, Haro Spain

We arrive in Haro, the old wine capital of Rioja by rental car, a couple hours from Bilbao. This is our hotel Los Augustinos. Super fancy looking but also very affordable and right in the heart of town.

Town Center, Haro Spain

The old town square in the middle of Haro, this used to be a major transit hub for wine. Still many classic producers are still running in the old capitol. A small and pleasant town full of character, good food, and great wine.

Marques de Riscal, Laguardia Spain

A beautiful tasting room which also features a Michelin starred restaurant, this is were old school Rioja meets the new and cutting edge. A fairly large producer, but featured a full range of all levels and styles of wines.

Bodegas Ysios, Laguardia Spain

Bodegas Ysios is a new school producer in the Rioja region. Featuring a state of the art and dramatic tasting room and winery, new french oak, and fancy grounds. We took the unconventional route and walked by foot there several miles, but the wines were stunning and worth the hike.

Lope Heredia, Rioja Spain

Perhaps the most traditional of all Rioja producers, and very well known. They only release wines when ready which often means a decade of age before it gets to you. Unfortunately there were no cellar tours as we arrived during harvest but we still got to try the amazing wine.

Laguardia Spain

Dramatic weather in Laguardia Spain. A quaint hilltop village thats been producing wine for hundreds of years. Small interesting shops and working wineries with cellars born into the caves below the village.

Did you enjoy the wines from the Rioja wine adventure? More are available along with some other wines from around Spain!
